Legal Resources
The documents below are designed to inform and assist youth and young adults experiencing homelessness. They do not constitute legal advice and are not a substitute for consultation with an experienced attorney with knowledge of your specific circumstances.
-
LCYC staff use the Legal Needs Checklist when holding legal intakes in the community or when chatting with youth interested in services. Often, youth and their advocates have trouble recognizing civil legal issues as legal issues. Additionally, it’s hard for attorneys to explain all that civil legal aid encompasses. The checklist helps by breaking common topics down into straightforward questions.
-
LCYC creates legal literacy videos explaining various civil legal rights, laws, and options that frequently come up in our work.
-
In Washington state, there are consent laws that support a youth’s right to make their own choices. Sharing information about consent laws is important to ensure youth have knowledge and awareness of these protections. LCYC created a minor consent chart that outlines common consent questions youth have and the applicable Washington laws.
-
This chart outlines options available for young people to receive a court order to either be legally placed with someone other than a parent or establish boundaries and/or distance with a parent.
-
A collaboration between the Y Social Impact Center and LCYC, this chart outlines the housing programs and vouchers available to young people, ages 18-21, who opt into Extended Foster Care (EFC). Some of these programs may also be available to young people not in EFC and beyond age 21 who may be struggling with housing instability or homelessness.

The Homeless Youth Handbook was designed for Washington state’s youth, social workers, counselors, teachers, police officers, health care professionals and the many others who provide daily support in the fight for justice for our homeless youth.
