Valkyrie Asgard* is a determined young person who enjoys helping others, learning new things, and thinking about the future. They have big dreams of becoming a teacher – possibly for second, third, or fourth grade – or even working as a middle school counselor or high school special education paraeducator. More than anything, Valkyrie wants to help young people communicate their needs, something they have had to navigate on their own for years.
Valkyrie learned about LCYC through a case manager while staying at a youth shelter. Before working with LCYC, Valkyrie spent time moving between different shelters, trying to find stability. Valkyrie’s original plan was to seek a minor guardianship with their uncle, but after looking into the process, they realized they would probably turn 18 before or shortly after the process was completed. Instead, Valkyrie decided what they really needed the ability to make their own decisions, without waiting any longer.
Valkyrie was soon connected with their LCYC attorney. Their LCYC attorney helped Valkyrie pursue an emancipation. Because of Valkyrie’s resolve, getting the petition together moved forward rather quickly. While legal emancipation gave them the authority to make important decisions for themselves, in many ways, Valkyrie already felt independent. They had been taking care of themselves for a long time, so the biggest change was that after the court granted Valkyrie’s petition things became easier. Particularly, they could move forward without the interference of parents who had mistreated them. Valkyrie now had full control over their own life.
For Valkyrie, emancipation wasn’t just about legal status – it was about starting over. While they already had experience being self-sufficient, the process gave them a new sense of security and confidence. And now, having gone through it, they hope to help others who might be in the same situation.
Valkyrie’s immediate goal is to find stable housing, but they are also thinking about the bigger picture. They are focused on improving their mental health and working toward their dream of becoming a teacher or counselor. They know that their experiences have given them a unique perspective – one that can help young people. Valkyrie is appreciative of the case managers, legal advocates, and shelter staff who believed in their strength and resilience throughout this process. As Valkyrie moves forward into their future, they carry that support with them, ready to build the life they’ve always wanted.
