Britney* is a thoughtful young person who enjoys spending time outdoors, especially walking though local parks, catching up on sleep whenever she can, and sharing a good meal - her favorite is chicken alfredo. She dreams of attending Paul Mitchell School of Cosmetology to become a hairdresser and one day she wants to open her own salon.
Britney was connected with LCYC through a supportive staff member at her school after experiencing significant changes in her life. Her father had not been involved in her life since 2023, and after the heartbreaking loss of her mother in October 2025, she suddenly found herself without a legal guardian who could care for her or make important decisions on her behalf. While she had a trusted stepfather who was providing care and support, there was no legal process in place to recognize that relationship.
Britney’s primary goal was simple - she needed to find someone who could help her navigate the legal situation she was facing. Through LCYC’s Youth Homelessness Program, she connected with an attorney who helped her begin the process of establishing a minor guardianship. Together, they filed a petition asking the court to appoint her stepfather as her legal guardian which would provide the legal stability Britney needs as she continues to move forward.
Although the guardianship case is still pending, taking this first step has given Britney hope and a clearer path forward. Rather than facing the uncertainty alone, she now has legal advocacy and a plan as she works toward creating a more stable future.
Britney is focused on what comes next. She hopes to attend cosmetology school, begin a career doing something she enjoys, and eventually save enough money to open a salon of her own. With the support of caring adults, her school, and legal advocates, she is working toward a future built on stability, independence, and opportunity.
